Winter Athletics and More

Tahlequah High School Athletics Winter sports are winding down with several Spring sports already scrimmaging before their upcoming season.

The THS wrestling team is having another great season posting a 15-2 dual record while capturing the district title. The wrestlers advanced to dual state for the second time in school history under the direction of head coach James Rappe. This past weekend the Athletic department hosted the 5A-East Wrestling Regional for the third straight year. Tahlequah had 2 wrestlers qualify for the state tournament which is February 26-27 in Oklahoma City.

Both basketball teams are preparing for regionals which starts on February 25 at East Central HS for the girls and February 26 at Coweta HS for the boys. If each of the teams wins on the first night, they will advance to next week’s area tournament with the location to be announced. Both teams are very young and the future is definitely bright for THS basketball. Head Coaches David Qualls and Rickey Bruner have immersed themselves in the junior high program.

As we move forward to warmer months, our focus will switch to outdoor sports.  Baseball, Softball, Track, Tennis, Golf, and Soccer teams are preparing with most of these teams starting official games on March 1.

We will still be streaming our sports on www.tahlequahtigers.tv  this spring as well. This allows all our parents, fans, and patrons to watch most of athletic events from their home computers free of charge. This is a student-led broadcast that the students have taken great pride in.

The Athletic Department hosted the 2nd Annual Tahlequah Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet on January 30th at the Tahlequah High School Cafeteria. Over 300 patrons saw Dr. Kent Lashley, Dr. Mike Dobbins, Dr. Karen Carter-Carey, Mr. Gary McClure, Mr. Bob Ed Culver, and Mr. Luke Dobbins inducted to the Tahlequah Athletics Hall of Fame. A special thanks goes out to all the businesses who sponsored a table.

With the looming forecast for budget cuts for all state schools, the athletic department will need your help - not just for athletics but for education overall. The Tahlequah Athletic department will be looking for more corporate sponsors in the upcoming months.

It has been a very busy but successful year for Tahlequah Athletics. As we go into spring, please plan to attend an event in the near future.    Go Tigers!!!!!!!!
