Transportation - New School Year

Tahlequah Public Schools Transportation Department has made some much needed, more economical changes over the summer for the 2016-2017 school year. With these changes, we were able to reduce bus routes from 23 to 21 routes. Also this year we will no longer be offering door to door service. The routes have shortened, and central locations have been put in place. All students who will be needing bus transportation to and from school, will need to fill out a new contract for bus services. These contracts not only give us a good estimate of how many students we will need to accommodate, but also valuable information for the students safety. Contracts must be completed in full by the parent or legal guardian of the student. These new contracts are located at the Transportation Department office at 820 Pendleton, across the street from the middle school.

Last school year our buses traveled 212,433 miles on routes alone. With these changes, we should see a significant savings on fuel, and maintenance issues in our district.

Our number one concern is the safety of the students. In order for us to achieve this, all drivers must have a CDL license, school bus driver certification, and must complete at least 4 hours of professional development throughout the year.

All buses have been inspected from top to bottom to meet state requirements. Also, every bus must have a pre-trip and post trip inspection performed by the driver. This helps insure the bus is in safe working condition for our students.

We have radio communication in every bus.  Drivers can communicate with the office if they need to.  We also have monitors on many of our buses to help the drivers and to help maintain discipline.  Riding the bus is a privilege and can be taken away from students if they don’t follow the simple rules.

We are excited for this new school year, and look forward to offering every student the safest possible transportation to and from school. For further information, you may contact the Transportation Department at 918-458-4168   Ask for either Assistant Transportation Director Larry Wood or Office Manager Meri Parks.
