Each year about this time, Tahlequah Public Schools begins the pre-enrollment process for the coming school year. This past week our concentration was on Tahlequah Middle School 8th grade students and 8th grade students that will be coming to Tahlequah High School next year as 9th grade students from Cherokee County dependent or K-8 schools. We encourage families leaving a K-8 school to seriously consider their decisions regarding 9th grade enrollment as this single decision has lasting implications over the next four years. The school chosen will be considered the students’ “school of choice” and moving to another school after attending the school of choice will be by transfer only. When a transfer is submitted, the receiving school has the option to accept or deny the transfer while the original school chosen does not have this option. For example, if an 8th grade student living in the Tenkiller school district and attending Tenkiller School chose to attend TPS as a 9th grader, Tahlequah would be obligated to accept their transfer. If after attending TPS a few weeks the student decided they’d rather try a smaller school and completed a transfer to attend Keys High School, Keys would have the option to accept the student or deny the transfer, as TPS would be considered the student’s school of choice.
Kindergarten through 5th grade pre-enrollment will be sent home with students March 20, 2017 and due back to each teacher by March 27, 2017. Pre-Kindergarten enrollment will be held at Sequoyah Elementary School, 425 S. College on April 18 and April 25, 2017. Students enrolling must be 4 years of age on or before September 1, 2017. This program has limited space and students are enrolled on a “first come-first served” basis. Enrollment information may be picked up at Sequoyah Elementary or at the Enrollment Center, 225 N. Water Street.
Kindergarten Roundup for students new to Tahlequah Public Schools will be held April 27, 2017 and May 16, 2017 at 225 N. Water Street. Enrollment packets may be picked up at 225 N. Water and appointment(s) made as parents pick up the enrollment information. Families and students not enrolled in TPS PreK program but wishing to attend kindergarten with us should plan to attend the roundup. Students must be 5 years of age on or before September 1, 2015.
All students must be enrolled by a parent or legal guardian and bring a copy of the student(s) birth certificate and immunizations as well as social security card, Sooner Care and CDIB if applicable. TPS is required to verify if the student enrolling resides in the school district. A printout from the Cherokee County Assessor’s office or filed Homestead Exemption form satisfies this requirement. A second form of residency is required and may be a copy of one of the following: previous month’s utility bill or phone bill, CDIB picture ID, a current lease agreement or valid Oklahoma Driver’s license with parent/guardian(s) name and must be the same physical address shown on the County Assessor’s printout. Check out our website at tahlequahpublicschools.org for a complete checklist of required documents.
We work diligently to encourage our current students and families to return their pre-enrollment information to their schools, which alleviates the need to enroll through the Enrollment Center at 225 N. Water during the summer. However, the Enrollment Center is open all summer and families may enroll at any time. Summer hours are 7:00 – 5:30 Monday through Thursday and closed on Friday during the months of June and July. Beginning August 1, the Enrollment Center is open Monday – Friday, 7:30 – 4:30.
