Tahlequah Middle School
The Middle School has had a great start to the school year. The turnout for the mock 6th grade day on August 6th was awesome with about 100 students participating. This event helped make those incoming 6th graders’ transition to the Middle School much smoother. The 6th grade Summer Social that evening met with a great turnout. The 7th & 8th grade Summer Socials the following day were likewise a hit, and these veterans to the Middle School were a big help with routine when the school year started.
They are pleased to announce the addition of the following new staff members: Principal, David Bookout, Assistant Principal, Abby Lamons, 7th grade Science, Rebecca Tillman, 7th grade Language Arts, Paden Smith, 7th grade Math, Josh Davis, 8th grade Science, Mistie Gorajewski and Allison Pittman, Family and Consumer Sciences. They also welcomed back Josh Hamilton in 8th grade Science. He is returning to the Middle School after serving a 24-month tour of duty with the Army National Guard! Thank you, Coach Hamilton, for your service!
The “Late Start Monday” has been a success. Parents, I want to thank you for your adaptation to this schedule. This process allows teachers to meet in their PLCs (Professional Learning Communities). This not only affords teachers the time to collaborate with others from their grade level to discuss teaching strategies but also allows them to meet with teachers in other grade levels to align curriculum. This is a time for staff to hone their craft and students will be the benefactors.
TMS fall sports kicked off with a pep assembly. It was a great time for students to be recognized and gave them a chance to cheer for one another’s interests. The 8th grade band played, and cheer and pom both had routines during the festivities. There was a “Color War” activity with each class wearing a different color: 6th white, 7th black and 8th orange. The 7th grade won the contest! This is a busy time with cross country, football, softball and volleyball all having contests. Please come out and support our students.
The TMS Students of the Month for September are: 6th graders Shantal Garcia, Madison Parish, and Megan Hopkins; 7th graders Lane Gulley and Aayushi Gandhi; and 8th graders Abigail Hill and Emma Lindstrom.
The Middle School is doing a new fundraiser for their building this year. They are selling corporate banner sponsorships. You may purchase a color banner with your business logo to be displayed in the Middle School Gym. There are numerous activities in the Middle School gym: assemblies, classes, exercise groups, inductions, and sporting events for Middle School as well as High School students. This fundraiser takes the place of the Middle School cookie sales, and has allowed them to increase classroom time by not having to have assemblies to organize these sales. It also keeps students from doing door-to-door sales. It has been a great success thus far; however, if any business owner is interested, please contact the Middle School for more details.
Lastly, the Middle School “Eclipse Day” will be a moment students will remember for the rest of their lives. Just think, the next time there is an eclipse in 2024, these students will be 18 to 21 years old-young adults! To really scare you parents, in 2045 the eclipse’s path of “totality” covers Tahlequah; these kiddos will be 39 to 42 years old. Some will have their own Middle School age students! Time flies when you are having fun and these students make the day go quickly! Thank you parents for sharing your most precious commodity! Go Tigers!
