Cold Weather and Closings

Tahlequah Public Schools dealt with the unexpected effects from the extremely cold weather this past week. The fire sprinkler system at Heritage Elementary froze and burst which delayed students and teachers from coming back to school on schedule after the Christmas Break.  However, as you know, winter isn’t over quite yet so more inclement weather could occur. Tahlequah Public Schools may attempt a late-start weather day in lieu of closing for bad weather if more closings are necessary.  This possibility would be considered only under the right circumstances when the district was confident a 10 AM start would be a safe commute. If this is attempted, then families would be notified by the calling system as early as possible. Late Start Weather Days would include:

  1. School beginning at 10 AM
  2. Transportation routes beginning at 8 AM
  3. No breakfast served in the cafeteria
  4. No student supervision prior to 9:45 AM
  5. Regular end of the day.
The district is prepared for this scenario if ever a possibility.   Families would be notified by the district calling system, local news and radio, and the district website if conditions are ever right for a late-start weather day. Tahlequah Public Schools will also communicate any additional school closings through Facebook.
Just a reminder that TPS has implemented late start days on Mondays this year with the school day beginning at 8:30 AM. On late start Monday mornings, transportation will run 30 minutes later at every school site and breakfast will be extended by 30 minutes. The dates for this year’s remaining Late Start Mondays will be:
    January 8, 22, 29
    February 5, 12, 19, 26
    March 5, 12, 26
    April 9, 16, 23, 30
    May 7
Late Start Monday has provided teachers with a consistent and focused time to improve student learning. We are monitoring the benefits of this procedure and welcome any feedback from the community on how we can improve this weekly time for teachers to collaborate in Professional Learning Communities.
