Every child deserves the chance to succeed in school, no matter what challenges they may face. At Tahlequah Public Schools, the Special Services department works to ensure that students with special needs receive the support necessary for their academic, physical, and emotional growth by identifying those who may benefit from special education services.

The district is committed to finding, identifying, and evaluating children who may have disabilities and require special education. Federal law requires Oklahoma schools to serve children with disabilities from birth through age 21 when those disabilities impact learning. These may include a variety of conditions such as developmental delays, autism, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, and speech or language impairments.

Identifying students early is essential to connecting them with the right resources. TPS collaborates with families, community groups, and medical professionals to locate children who may not yet be receiving needed services. Support is available for children ages 3–21, while those under age 3 may qualify for early intervention through Oklahoma’s Infant and Toddler program, Sooner Start.

When a disability is confirmed, the school may develop an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which details the students’ needs and the services that will help them succeed. This ensures that each student receives an education tailored to their individual learning requirements.

Tahlequah Public Schools provides a wide range of special education services, such as speech, occupational, and physical therapy. These supports are offered based on evaluation results and the student’s IEP. The district also strives to assist families by offering information and guidance to help them better understand their child’s needs and available services.

Parents and guardians who believe their child may have a disability or developmental delay are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher, school counselor, or the Special Services department at the TPS Education Service Center. Each school site has staff and resources to assist with referrals, evaluations, and IEP development.

Through its special education program, TPS continues to make strides in ensuring that all students—regardless of ability—have access to the educational services and support they need to succeed.

The district also recognizes the essential role of its five school nurses. Every day, these professionals manage numerous health-related responsibilities, from administering medication to assisting students who manage chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, and allergies. They respond to emergencies, provide first aid, and support students coping with illness or injury. School nurses also help monitor for signs of communicable illnesses, playing a key role in maintaining a healthy school environment. TPS is grateful for their dedication and the care they provide, helping create a safe and nurturing atmosphere for all students and staff.
