Sequoyah Pre-K is celebrating a successful first semester marked by strong relationships, intentional instruction, and engaging school-wide experiences that support the whole child.

From the first day of school, staff members at Sequoyah Pre-K prioritized building positive relationships with students. Teachers and staff greeted children each morning, helping them feel safe, valued, and ready to learn. Positive interactions continued throughout the day, reinforcing a strong sense of belonging and community. These intentional efforts have helped students feel confident in their school environment and prepared for academic and social success.

A major emphasis during the first semester was Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). Students participated in weekly SEL lessons led by Mrs. McIntosh that focused on cooperation, communication, problem-solving, and responsible decision-making. These lessons allowed students to practice expressing emotions, resolving conflicts, and working collaboratively with peers. Developing these skills early helps children build self-confidence, strengthen relationships, and develop the self-regulation needed for long-term success in school.

Fine motor and gross motor skill development were also key areas of focus. Teachers implemented daily activities designed to strengthen these essential skills in age-appropriate ways. Fine motor skills support tasks such as writing, cutting, dressing, and using classroom tools, while also contributing to cognitive development through hand-eye coordination and problem-solving. Gross motor activities helped students develop balance, coordination, spatial awareness, and healthy movement habits.

As Sequoyah Pre-K enters the second semester, several exciting events and initiatives are planned. In February, students will celebrate the 100th day of school. The Spring Book Fair will take place February 9–13 and will be open to families from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Students will also visit the Oklahoma Aquarium on February 26, providing a hands-on learning experience. In addition, several staff members will participate in the Polar Plunge to raise funds for Special Olympics.

March activities include student participation in the Cherokee County Art Show, with selected student artwork displayed at the Performing Arts Center. The month will also feature Sequoyah Pre-K’s 7th Annual Trike-a-thon, the school’s largest fundraiser. During this event, students collect sponsorships and ride tricycles to see how many laps they can complete in a 10-minute period.

April will bring warmer weather, increased outdoor learning opportunities, and the beginning of pre-enrollment for the upcoming school year.  May brings end-of-year celebrations, including visits to future elementary schools and Sequoyah Pre-K’s graduation ceremony.

Sequoyah Pre-K looks forward to an active and engaging second semester that continues to support student growth and learning. Community members are encouraged to follow the school on Facebook or visit the campus to see the positive work taking place in classrooms each day.
