The Roles That Bring a School to Life
By Kair Ridenhour, Executive Director of Elementary Education
Every day, our schools are supported by dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to ensure children feel safe, supported, and inspired to learn. As Executive Director of Elementary Education, I have the privilege of witnessing firsthand the extraordinary commitment of our teachers and support staff.
Education is often described as a team effort, but in our schools, it is much more than that. It is a family effort. Every adult in our buildings contributes to the success and well-being of our students, from the bus driver who greets children each morning with a smile, to the teacher guiding them through new discoveries, to the custodian ensuring classrooms are clean and hallways are safe. This shared dedication forms the foundation on which student learning and growth are built.
Our teachers are the architects of learning. They bring lessons to life, spark curiosity, and nurture confidence in every student. Through creativity, patience, and compassion, they turn challenges into opportunities and help students believe in themselves and their abilities. Teachers are mentors, encouragers, and role models who shape not only academic growth, but also character and resilience. Their work is deeply personal, and its impact lasts a lifetime.
Yet education is not the work of teachers alone, it is the result of many essential roles working together each day.
Our administrators and instructional coaches provide the leadership and guidance that help our schools thrive. Principals and assistant principals set the vision, support staff members, and create cultures where students and adults feel valued, safe, and empowered to grow. Instructional coaches work side by side with teachers, strengthening practice, supporting professional learning, and ensuring high-quality instruction for every child. Together, they serve as partners, problem-solvers, and champions for both students and staff, quietly shaping the conditions that allow great teaching and learning to flourish.
Our bus drivers are often the first and last school staff members to see our students. They set the tone for the morning and provide comfort at the end of the day, ensuring every child arrives at school and returns home safely. A warm greeting from a trusted driver can make a meaningful difference in a student’s day.
Our paraprofessionals and special care paraprofessionals play a vital role in supporting individualized learning and inclusion. Working closely with teachers and students, they provide guidance, encouragement, and personalized support that allows every child to thrive. Their quiet dedication ensures that no student is overlooked.
In our cafeterias, staff members do far more than serve meals. They provide nourishment, care, and a sense of belonging. A healthy meal served with kindness helps students feel supported and ready to learn, reinforcing the strong sense of community within our schools.
Our custodians are the unsung heroes who maintain clean, safe, and welcoming learning environments. Though much of their work happens behind the scenes, its impact is felt by everyone. Their pride in their work reflects a deep commitment to our school communities.
Our office staff employees serve as the heartbeat of each building—supporting families, coordinating communication, managing daily operations, and ensuring that everyone who enters feels welcomed and supported.
When we step back and see the full picture, it becomes clear that our schools succeed because of the collective efforts of all these individuals working together to serve children. Every kind word, nutritious meal, and engaging lesson contributes to an environment where students can grow.
As we reflect on the work happening in our schools each day, let’s take a moment to truly celebrate the incredible people who make it all happen. It’s the smiles in the hallway, the high-fives after a big accomplishment, the steady encouragement during tough moments, and the laughter shared along the way that make our schools special. Every role matters, every effort counts, and every day brings new opportunities to make a difference.
